Alciston Church
Nestled into the north face of the South Downs is the small and ancient Hamlet of Alciston. The 12th century Norman church, once a chapel-of-ease for Battle Abbey, sits upon a ridge surrounded by fields and overlooking the Manor house, Alciston Court . During the 13th century the chancel and nave was altered and again in the 15th century, which is mainly how the Church appears today. Over the centuries the churches original dedication has been lost.
Alciston Church is part of the Cuckmere Pilgrim Path. A 12 mile circular walk that takes you past seven historic, rural churches across the South Downs National Park and Cuckmere Valley.
Inside Alciston church hangs “The Pilgrim Bell”
All field recordings made with a Samsung mic (second hand off Ebay) plugged into my mobile phone and recorded on a free app then manipulated in a version of Ableton with a little bit of poetic licence.
Rural District Lo-Fi Recording Project is an attempt to capture the atmosphere of the Sussex countryside.
